FCI has licensed WL Gore and Associates to provide high speed cable assemblies using its revolutionary AirMax VS technology The combination of FCI's AirMax VS high speed connector technology and Gore's cable expertise provides equipment designers the ability to obtain true end to end interconnect solutions for their high speed applications such as high end servers and telecomms and IP switches

"We are excited about this opportunity", said Rob Poort, Global Communications Market Manager at FCI.

"Working with Gore will drive the development of high performance digital cable connectors that can support very high datarate transmissions".

"Gore's expertise on high speed cables and cable assemblies provides great synergy with FCI's efforts to further push the electrical performance of AirMax VS (cable) connectors".

"We are pleased to bring together FCI's expertise in high speed connector design with Gore's high datarate cable technology to offer a datalink that can provide an aggregate bandwidth of 1.0Tbit/s using only 50mm of linear backplane space", states David Gioconda, Global Data Comm Market Segment Leader for Gore.

"FCI's wealth of connector knowledge and Gore's years of experience in cable design and termination have come together for the first time to provide the industry with a reliable cost effective interconnect system for bussing high speed signals".

"This technology is ideal for large scale servers, telecomms switches and other data intensive hardware".

The design of AirMax VS connectors is unique when compared with that of alternative connector products because of its use of air as the dielectric material - both between signal paths within a column and between adjacent columns.

Incidentally, the abbreviation VS appropriately stands for "virtual shield" as the connector system is the first of its kind containing no interleaving shields.

The release of AirMax VS connector terminal blocks will add an I/O solution to the rapidly expanding family of AirMax VS products.

FCI's AirMax VS terminal block design uses a four-pair-per-column configuration providing a density of 100 differential pairs per 50mm of linear board length.

In reference designs, the AirMax VS connector has demonstrated excellent signal integrity at speeds from 2.5 to 10Gbit/s, and allows users to scale systems to greater than 12Gbit/s without requiring a basic platform redesign.

Other AirMax VS products available today include three-, four- and five-pair headers and receptacles each of which offered with various column counts and spacing allowing for flexibility in PCB design.

Future offerings of AirMax VS products include modules with FCI's patented BGA connector termination technology.
