Connectors support next-generation
backplanes
Huawei and FCI have successfully demonstrated 12.5Gbit/s transmission on a backplane system designed around the ATCA building practice using FCI's AirMax VS connectors in Zone 2.
Huawei and FCI, supported by Sanmina-SCI, have successfully demonstrated 12.5Gbit/s transmission on a backplane system designed around the ATCA building practice using FCI's AirMax VS connectors in Zone 2 This demonstration proves that custom ATCA backplanes allow for performance levels beyond what ATCA was originally designed to provide

Backplane connector crams in the contacts
The AirMax VS backplane connector system offers designers a pin density providing up to 50 differential pair or 150 single ended connections per 25mm daughtercard slot spacing.
Novel backplane connector gains second source
FCI has signed a second source licence agreement granting Amphenol the right to manufacture, market, and sell the four- and five-pair AirMax VS (Virtual Shield) connector worldwide.
Tested in the FCI Signal Integrity Laboratories in Os-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, the demonstration comprised a 16-layer back panel incorporating full mesh structures with 500mm long traces embedded in multiple dielectric materials.
These higher speed transmissions will benefit many telecomms applications such as optical switches and transmission equipment.
The very low crosstalk performance of less than 1% exceeded the expectations of both Huawei and FCI.
The selection of AirMax VS technology by Huawei proves that the connector system meets the challenging requirements that the telecommunications sector demands.
In addition to superior electrical performance, the AirMax VS family offers high reliability that is further enhanced by the dual-beam, double-sided contact system.
Most backplane connectors offer only single-side contacts, so contact is only made on one side of the header pin, leaving the connector vulnerable to loss of contact when experiencing shock or vibration.
The AirMax VS connector uses a dual-beam contact system, so the blade slides into a receptacle with two points of contact on each side of the blade, greatly increasing reliability and durability.
Since its commercial introduction more than two years ago, FCI has been shipping well over a hundred million AirMax VS lines to the market.
Huawei products cover every sector in the communication market.
Demands for higher bandwidth for data communication and optical network applications, as well as the maturation of the 10-12Gbit/s high-speed backplane standard, are pushing the development of next generation high-speed backplanes.
The backplane is the key component of telecomms equipment, and the backplane connectors' performance directly impacts the performance of the backplane.
The Huawei High Speed Backplane R and D and Laboratory is developing the next-generation high-speed backplane.
