Cove Broadcast is supplying Fischer Connectors' innovative 1053 fibre-optic HDTV broadcast camera connectors as an option on its Z-Link camera link system.
The 1053 connector is incorporated into the high definition interface which is a supplement to the standard Z-Link SD capability, providing an HD connection to the camera adapter and adding bandwidth to the link for transmission of HD-SDI data to the basestation.
Cove Broadcast's Managing Director Gordon Day comments: "Z-Link was designed as a fibre optic transmission system in order to overcome the distance limitation on sending HD signals over copper".
"With a fibre-optic link we can deliver full digital quality up to 10km".
"We now have a number of customers who have specified the Fischer connector, which has the unique advantage of being field repairable, in contrast with alternatives which have to be returned for repair".
"We see this benefit as providing something of a breakthrough in fibre optic technology, helping to dispel the popular perception of it as a black art".
"Our customers are very happy with their choice".
Cove Broadcast is using a hybrid 1053 connector carrying two fibre-optic and two copper contacts.
In this way it is able to offer over a single cable full, digitally perfect bidirectional audio, video and communications between the OB van and camera, as well as 200W to power the camera and ancillaries without reliance on batteries.
If damage occurs in the harsh conditions of outside broadcast, Fischer's SMPTE signal-compliant 1053 HDTV broadcast camera connectors minimise downtime through simple, on-site termination in just a few minutes.
They are designed to offer camera manufacturers, mobile truck providers, production centres and broadcast studios an effortless transition to fibre-based HDTV cameras.
The connectors combine the field-tested reliability of Fischer's established broadcast triax connectors with Corning's UniCam fibre-optic contacts, which have been successfully employed in broadcast applications as well as in high volume by the telecommunications industry.
