Smallest hard drive connects a big
future
Working with engineers from Toshiba, Fujikura DDK has developed a novel range of connectors which are an integral part of the world's smallest hard disk drives.
As the need for smaller and more compact equipment with a larger data storage capability increases, so the need for smaller hard disk drives becomes greater To answer this need Toshiba has developed a new range of 1.8in ATA embedded hard disk drives that are the smallest hard disk drives on the market

Connectors drive for disc miniaturisation
Fijikura DDK manufactures a wide range of connector solutions for hard disc drives, including the latest 1.8in devices.
The current range has a maximum storage facility of 20Gbyte but Toshiba is continually developing the range, with larger capacity HDDs available soon.
Interest in these 1.8in HDDs has been high and they are already been used in some Toshiba notebooks and also the Apple I-Pod, but it is only a matter of time before their use becomes much more widespread.
Typical applications for these HDDs include MP3 players, handheld PCs and notebooks and also mobile data storage equipment.
To ensure that Toshiba had a suitably reliable range of connectors to accompany its HDDs, Fujikura DDK was selected to design and develop these connectors in consultation with Toshiba's engineers.
The connector range developed by Fujikura DDK is the MCD-D range, which is surface mount with either 44 or 50 contacts (to facilitate a HDD slave and master setup).
The female connector is fitted to the HDD and the male connector, which is available in various height options, is fitted to the mating equipment.
The hard disk drives and connectors can be seen on Fujikura DDK's stand at Electronica next week in Munich (stand B4.467).
