The Winbond W78E727F single-chip controller features a USB port for transferring data in designs such as MP3 players, MultiMedia, CompactFlash or SmartMedia card readers/writers and voice recorders.

Their architecture consists of a core controller running at 12MHz and surrounded by various registers, four general-purpose I/O ports, one special-purpose programmable 4bit I/O port, 256byte of RAM, three timer/counters and a serial port.

There are 111 different opcodes, a 64K program address space and 64K data storage space.

As well as a USB 1.1-compliant interface providing full-speed transfers up to 12Mbit/s, the devices have an ATA/IDE port and RS-232C serial communications.

64Kbyte of on-chip Flash EPROM provides in-system programmability via USB or serial ports, plus there is an in-circuit emulation mode to assist development.

An 8051 RAM mode provides compatibility with general-purpose micros, addressing both internal RAM and internal and external MOVX RAM.

The microcontrollers support all popular MP3 decoders including the MAS3507D from Micronas.

There is also comprehensive support for data storage cards including SmartMedia up to 128MB, CompactFlash and MultiMedia Card up to 32MB.

Transfer rates up to 16.6MB/s are achievable for SmartMedia and CompactFlash.

Voice recorder applications are facilitated by the devices' support for ADPCM codecs, and additionally there is an on-chip I2C interface for LCD controller ICs.

The W78E727F operates from 3.0 to 5.5V supplies, allowing power to be drawn from the USB interface.

Power-down and current-saving idle modes are provided to extend battery life.

These new USB microcontrollers are available from Flint in 128-pin or 100-pin QFP packaging.
