Flint has launched a low power V.22bis modem demonstration and evaluation kit, featuring a complete socket type modem on a break-off section of the board The kit is based on the ultra-low power CMX868 V.22bis modem IC from Consumer Microcircuits (CML)

The CML DE8681 demonstration kit from Flint is delivered as a complete reference design, including onboard CMX868 IC, telephone and PC interfaces, and a Flash PIC microcontroller that can be serially programmed in circuit via the RS232 connection provided.

Source code, schematics, software, PCB manufacture files and full documentation to produce a fully developed CMX868-based socket-type modem are also included.

The kit includes AT-command compatible firmware, and is featured to support type 1 caller line identification (CLI).

Hardware for the PC and telephone interfaces, including a 9-pin D-type socket for PC serial communications, Flash PIC programming connector and RJ11 line connector, is mounted on a break-off section of the PCB.

This allows the socket modem section to be removed and used as an actual size prototype immediately after initial evaluation, using the socket pins provided to connect signals into and out of the modem.

Status LEDs to monitor line activity are also mounted on a second break-off section for removal after evaluation is complete.

The board has been laid out for both CTR21 and FCC Part 68 compliant Data Access Arrangement (DAA) designs.

It is fitted with components for the simpler FCC68 design, with instructions for fitting CTR21 components included as part of the DE8681 reference design and evaluation package.

The demonstration board requires a 3 or 5V regulated power supply.

In the end application, the power consumption of the CMX868 is 5mA at 2.7V, making it suitable for low power and line powered applications such as customer premises equipment and remote stations.

It also has a zero-power stand-by mode.

Maximum bit rate is 2400baud full-duplex over two- orfour-wire circuits, making the CMX868 ideal for transmitting small packets of data by eliminating the call setup time and power overhead of high-speed modems.

The CMX868 also supports V.22, Bell 212A, V,23, Bell 202, V.21 and Bell 103 protocols.
