Greener capacitors aid WEEE compliance
New commercial, environmentally safe tantalum chip capacitors are drop-in replacements for existing styles, providing a pain-free step towards WEEE compliance.
New commercial, environmentally safe tantalum chip capacitors manufactured by NEC Tokin and available from Flint are drop-in replacements for existing styles, providing a pain-free step towards WEEE compliance.
Following the merger between NEC's component division and Tokin, the new venture has confirmed Flint as a UK distributor.
The NEC Tokin ES/V series from Flint has eliminated lead from component terminals, and halide material and antimony from the moulded resin case.
The new halide-free resins enable ES/V capacitors achieve the flame retardant certifications held by their conventional equivalents.
The range is a drop-in replacement for conventional R-series or SV/S series devices.
Package dimensions are identical and lead-free component terminations are compatible with current tin-lead solders as well as future lead-free formulations.
These new generation capacitors can help move makers of telecom equipment, computers, AV equipment and other professional, industrial and consumer electronic products towards meeting planned environmental legislation such as the EU's Waste in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive.
The devices are suitable for surface mounting, and capable of withstanding the elevated soldering temperatures required for successful lead-free reflow and wave soldering.
ES/V devices are available in EIA standard cases from 1608 to 7343, and standard capacitance values from 0.47 to 470uF.
The full range offers 136 ES/V variants, covering DC operating voltage from 2.5 to 35V.
