Fibre-optic transceivers roll off the
line
Finisar has made its first customer delivery of XFP 10Gbit/s optical transceivers.
Finisar has made its first customer delivery of XFP 10Gbit/s optical transceivers These first XFP transceivers use a 1310nm DFB laser, and comply with 10km 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GBase-LR per IEEE802.3ae) and Sonet OC-192 SR-1

Optical cables slash power needs
Laserwire uses fibre optic technology for the transmission of data while reducing the weight, density and power consumption of copper wire.
Optical products offer copper alternative
The Longwave fibre channel SFP+ 1310nm transceivers support 1.4km and 10km transmission over single-mode fibre.
XFP transceivers feature a serial 10Gbit/s electrical interface called XFI, which removes the need to place electrical mux/demux chips inside the module.
This results in significant space, power and cost savings for datacomms and telecomms system manufacturers.
The XFP is an application-agnostic ultra-small 10Gbit/s optical transceiver module being standardised by the XFP MSA Group.
Its small footprint and low power dissipation enables the highest board density applications in the industry.
These factors, in addition to its protocol independence, provide the lowest overall system cost solution for OEMs.
The group currently has more than 65 member companies.
Its founding members include Broadcom, Brocade, Emulex, Finisar, JDS Uniphase, Maxim Integrated Products, Ciena, ICS (a Sumitomo Electric company), Tyco Electronics and Velio.
"We are extremely excited by the strong customer interest in XFP", said Rudy Hofmeister, Director of High-Speed Optics Development at Finisar.
"This 10km XFP transceiver is just the first of an entire suite of XFP products supporting up to 80km links", he added.
The hot-pluggable XFP transceiver includes a "bail" latch release mechanism for easy insertion and removal into a standardized metallic cage.
This cage is soldered on the host board and includes a new modular heat-sink design to facilitate heat management.
Additionally, the XFP modules support digital diagnostics and monitoring functions, which are accessed through a 2-pin serial bus and provide calibrated, absolute real time measurements of the laser bias current, transmitted optical power, received optical power, internal transceiver temperature and the supply voltage.
Digital diagnostic functionality allows telecommunication and data communications companies to implement reliable performance monitoring of the optical link in a very accurate and cost-effective way.
