Tiny module is all-in Ethernet to serial
solution
A new module that allows users to quickly connect serial devices to Ethernet networks is only slightly larger than a regular RJ45 connector.
Focus EDL, the leading electronic components distributor specialising in the communications and high-performance datacomms industries, has a new module that allows users to quickly connect serial devices to Ethernet networks The EM202, which is produced by Tibbo Technology, is a 100BaseT Ethernet to serial module in RJ45 form factor

Speedy access for 16Mbit Flash
The Eon Silicon Solutions EN29LV160 is a 16Mbit erasable, read/write nonvolatile Flash memory.
Although at just 32.3 x 19 x 16mm it is only slightly larger than a regular RJ45 connector, the new module is a single component Ethernet to serial solution containing built-in Ethernet magnetics, an RJ45 connector, a serial port offering full or half duplex operation and four status LEDs.
It also incorporates an internal processor whose firmware acts as a bridge between the Ethernet and serial ports.
Using Tibbo's application firmware, the module is easy to integrate as setup can be performed through the serial port or via the network where over-the-network IP-address configuration is supported.
"There are many companies who continue to design systems around serial devices but who want the performance benefits of Ethernet", says Focus EDL's Geoff Philpot.
"And, of course, there are even more customers who have an installed base of serially connected products".
These are common throughout industry where computer-controlled equipment only has a serial port for communication and, in many commercial installations, where users still mix serial devices with faster means of communication.
This single component is a simple solution for anyone who needs to connect a serial device to an Ethernet network.
For designers wishing to evaluate the EM202, Focus EDL has also made available an evaluation board.
Based around the new module, the EM202-EV offers a convenient way to assess the module's capabilities but, at 52.6 x 38mm, it is small enough to be built-in to production units as a faster implementation alternative to a module.
The EM202-EV is available with two power options: a direct 5V DC input or an onboard power regulator with a 9 to 24V DC input.
The board has one 100BaseT Ethernet port and a choice of RS232 or TTL-level serial port.
