Intel's Xscale devices are RISC processors based on the ARM v5TE Architecture.
They are second-generation versions of Intel's StrongARM devices and offer the same industry-leading combination of ultra-low power consumption with very high performance.
Targeted at environments ranging from handheld devices to internet infrastructure, they are ideal candidates for voice, secure data and audio/video streaming applications.
The Force technology demonstrator design is based on an Intel IOP310 I/O processor chipset comprising the 80200 processor and the 80312 I/O companion chip.
This chipset is targeted at price/performance leadership in intelligent RAID applications, internet storage applications (SCSI, Fibre Channel, SAN), networking (LAN, ATM, Ethernet, switches, routers), workstations, and various embedded applications, which require high-performance I/O subsystems.
The Force design incorporates a number of I/O interface types, including Ethernet switch ports, V.90 modem, USB, PCMCIA, serial ports and expansion PCI slots to demonstrate and test functionality.
The Intel IXP1200 network processor combines the best attributes of a network ASIC with the flexibility, performance and scalability of a programmable embedded processor.
It integrates six multithreaded micro engines and the StrongARM processor core at 167, 200 or 233MHz.
It is specifically designed for network control tasks, such as wire-speed switching or routing of packets or cells in real time.
This network processor forms part of the Intel Internet Exchange Architecture (Intel IXA), a comprehensive framework of networking and communication building blocks that enables fast deployment of intelligent networks.
The Force technology demonstrator combines dual IXP1250 processors together with several Gigabit Ethernet ports and switches in a 6U cPCI form-factor.
The board supports the Compact Packet Switching Backplane standard (cPSB), also known as PICMG 2.16, and system management PICMG 2.9.
