Tiny Flash MCU integrates full CAN
control

Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe has developed the MB90F387, a powerful Flash CAN microcontroller, housed in a minute 48-pin enclosure with plastic encapsulation measuring only 7mm square.

Adopting the peripheral blocks and the CPU of the 64-pin 16bit 64Kbyte MB90F497G microcontroller, which is already in worldwide use, Fujitsu implemented a die shrink, which enabled the same number of gates to be integrated within the smaller housing at reduced cost.

Contrary to the normally cost-driven practice of applying new manufacturing technology to the largest and most complex chips first, Fujitsu opted to develop devices at the low end of the company's 16LX series 16bit microcontroller range at the same time as high-end devices.

These important low-end microcontrollers offer powerful yet inexpensive options.

From this new device, right up to the upper end of the family, currently represented by a chip integrating 384Kbyte of Flash memory and 10Kbyte of RAM in a 120-pin package, the Fujitsu 16LX series covers a unique spectrum, with as many as 12 devices featuring full CAN interface and embedded Flash in addition to a large number of mask ROM variants.

All family members of 16LX microprocessors feature 16bit architecture, combining 2Mbyte of address space with high code efficiency, thereby saving memory costs.

The CPU incorporates on-chip PLL, a 4byte instruction queue and multiplication and division instructions.

Around the CPU are a 10bit analogue-to-digital convertor, a Flash macro with integrated charge pump for rewriting the memory without auxiliary voltage and a CAN module.

The CAN 2.0A and 2.0B compliant module is available with 8 or 16 buffers, which can be programmed individually for receiving or sending data.

Identifiers with a length of 11 or 29bit can be selected in a variety of ways: comparison of all identifier bits, complete mask comparison or comparison with one or two mask registers.

In addition, the MB90F387 is equipped with a UART, various timers, an input capture unit and a programmable pulse width modulation generator.

An interrupt line is linked internally with the CAN module to allow easy awakening of the microcontroller via CAN.

Four additional interrupts are available externally and a 32kHz sub-clock can be used to generate a timebase and expand the power management options.

First samples of the new Flash CAN chip are anticipated to be available in December 2001.

A mask ROM variant is planned for the second half of 2002.

This microcontroller will be the lowest-priced in the 16LX range and is probably the lowest-priced of all 16bit microcontrollers with CAN currently available. Request a free brochure from Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe ...
