Multichip MPEG device integrates PCI and
memory

Fujitsu has developed a stacked multichip-package (MCP) MPEG device which includes a PCI interface, MPEG-2 video/audio encoder and 64Mbit FCRAM in a single package.

Fujitsu has developed a stacked multichip-package (MCP) MPEG device which includes a PCI interface, MPEG-2 video/audio encoder and 64Mbit FCRAM in a single package Samples of the MB86393 will be available from January 2002, with volume production from April 2002

The shift in recent years to digital AV appliances has led to the development of various devices that employ MPEG-2 technology for compressing and decompressing high-quality audio and video signals, including PCs with multimedia capabilities, DVD players and digital broadcast receivers.

In addition to the ability to play back compressed MPEG-2 signals, these devices are now also beginning to be equipped to record information digitally.

The development of this market has led to a demand for MPEG-2 encoder chips that digitally compress audio and video signals.

Fujitsu's new product includes an MPEG-2 video/audio encoder and 64Mbit FCRAM in a single, compact (16 x 16mm) 288-pin FLGA (fine-pitch land-grid array) package.

The package has its own onboard memory and requires no connection to external memory, as video and audio signals can be converted into compressed signals that conform to a MPEG-2 system format.

Moreover, because the MPEG-2 encoder chip includes a PCI interface, there is no need for a separate controller. Request a free brochure from Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe ...
