SAW filters save space in handheld
designs

Fujitsu Media Devices has developed the world's smallest, ultrathin, compact SAW filters for mobile communications applications.

Fujitsu Media Devices has developed the world's smallest, ultrathin, compact SAW filters for mobile communications applications The new family of products contributes to the design of mobile phones and other mobile communications devices with smaller sizes, lower profiles and higher performance

FMD has been supplying a large number of SAW devices for mobile communications, used in particular for RF circuits within mobile phones, to manufacturers all over the world.

Recently, RF front-end designs have been advanced in complexity (for example with dual-filter and front-end modules) to satisfy the needs for the higher performance, smaller size, lighter weight, and lower price of terminals.

For RF module applications in particular, there has been strong demand for components to be smaller and thinner.

FMD has successfully developed dual-filter SAW products with dual-band support and the same thickness (0.5mm) as the single-filter type, satisfying market needs.

Fujitsu's SAW devices are housed in microminiature, ultrathin packages, which are based on the company's proprietary sealing and high-density packaging technologies.

Single-filter devices have maximum dimensions of 1.4 x 1.0 x 0.5mm.

The new dual-filter devices now feature maximum dimensions of 1.8 x 1.4 x 0.5 or 2.0 x 1.6 x 0.5mm.

While maintaining their compactness, the SAW devices employ a hermetic structure with metal sealing in a Fujitsu proprietary enclosure.

This hermetic structure not only features excellent heat and environment resistant characteristics, but also sufficient resistance to mechanical vibration and shock, providing high reliability.

Fujitsu's proprietary electrode design, also used in these new SAW filters, minimises the overall insertion loss.

Looking at typical values for reception filters in a PCS system, the insertion loss is 1.4dB and the transmission band attenuation 18dB.

The company offers a complete family of standard SAW products supporting mobile communications devices, in particular a variety of mobile phone systems.

Single-filter products are ideal for GSM850, EGSM, DCS, PCS, W-CDMA and GPS, and dual-filter for GSM850+EGSM and DCS+PCS.

Fujitsu's SAW devices are also available in balanced/unbalanced and unbalanced/unbalanced terminations.

All devices currently exist in sample quantities and volume production has commenced.

They will be supported in Europe by Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe. Request a free brochure from Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe ...
