Media bus supports in-car networks

The MB91F467M targets car audio applications and acts as a gateway between the MOST bus and up to ten I2S interfaces.

Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) and SMSC have implemented SMSC's Media Local Bus (MediaLB) technology in the latest member of Fujitsu's 32bit MB91460 microcontroller product series, the MB91F467M These microcontrollers are designed to support high-performance automotive and industrial applications to ensure fast data processing and distribution

The MediaLB serial bus interface provides seamless connectivity to SMSC's media oriented systems transport (MOST) intelligent network interface controller (INIC) family.

The MB91F467M is a member of Fujitsu's MB91460 range of controllers, designed for automotive applications including body control, dashboard and/or infotainment.

The MB91F467M targets car audio applications and acts as a gateway between the MOST bus and up to ten I2S interfaces.

In addition to data, MediaLB also provides a clock path with extremely low jitter from the MOST backbone to or from those interfaces.

The MediaLB function block allows 256fs and 512fs operation.

It contains a buffer of 2048 x 32bit and offers support for 16 channels.

Mathias Braeuer, Senior Manager of Automotive Marketing at FME said: "With the MB91F467M, we have extended the support of in-car networking protocols from LIN, CAN and FlexRay to MOST".

"In this way, we are continuing to develop our MB91460 MCU series as a single platform for use in several application fields".

SMSC's MediaLB is an inter-chip communication technology that allows one or more application/s to access the MOST network by connecting them to an INIC.

MOST technology is a de facto industry standard for automotive multimedia networking of high-bandwidth audio, video and control information or network data, enabling applications to communicate with a minimum of effort.

MediaLB is also designed to support future MOST networks, thereby providing a simple migration path from existing MOST architectures to next-generation platforms.

"We are pleased to extend our relationship with Fujitsu to enable greater flexibility in their automotive-grade devices via the widely accepted MediaLB standard", said Markus Schmitt, Manager of Strategic Marketing for SMSC's automotive infotainment systems product line.

Based on Fujitsu's 0.18um embedded flash technology and 32bit RISC MCU core, the MB91F467M is optimised for applications requiring 32bit performance at up to 80MHz and various communication interfaces.

In addition to the MediaLB I2S gateway, it features two CAN controller interfaces with 32 and 64 message buffers, nine LIN-USART modules for synchronous and asynchronous serial communication, including LIN support and eight dedicated I2C interfaces, which can act as master or slave modules.

A variety of timers, a 10bit ADC with 12 channels and a 16bit external bus interface, complete the set of functions.

The on-chip memory includes 1088Kbyte of flash, 64Kbyte of RAM and an 8Kbyte cache.

Debugging is supported by the on-chip debug support unit, which can be directly connected to Fujitsu's ICE system.

The MB91F467M is housed in an LQFP-216 package.

First samples will be available in the second quarter of 2008.
