Gel-Mec UK has developed a novel series of small high-performance low-load gel mounts.

Gel-Mec UK has developed a novel series of small high-performance low-load gel mounts The new light-load mounts are purpose designed for a wide range of electronic applications

They help dissipate vibrational energy and reduce noise or provide component isolation from external shocks and vibration.

Using the latest developments in material technologies, high damping performance is maintained on loads as low as 200g with micro vibrations removed beyond the control of traditional rubber-based products.

Ideal for PCBs, HDDs, CD-ROMs, mini microphones, mini cooling fans, small motors and pumps.

The materials can play an especially important role in handheld equipment, automated and precision environments.

Gel grommets are available in diameters from 11 to 25mm and for loads from 200g to 32kg.

The grommet is through bolted to minimize drift and recommended frequency for the smallest grommet is 90Hz.

Gel sheet is also available for volume production facilities including injection moulding.

Suitable for loads as low as 400g, available in 1, 2, 2.8, 3, 4 and 5mm thickness options.

Effective frequency range is 30Hz.

Gel sandwich mounts are available in diameters from 18mm suitable for loads of 1.6 to 50kg.

The material is metal-bonded during moulding to achieve strengths equivalent to vulcanised rubber-to-metal bonds.

Recommended frequency for the smallest mount is 18Hz.

Products perform throughout a wide temperature range of -40 to +200C, and are ozone, UV and chemically resistant.

A special formulation is available for HDDs which has no silicone off gassing.

Of the components contained in a drive-equipped device, the HDD is nearly always the dominant noise source.

A properly designed isolator will reduce the transfer of vibration from the HDD to the chassis and enclosure panels.

The result is a quieter piece of equipment.

Gel-Mec's favourite challenge to customers is the ''egg test''.

At Nepcon visitors to the company's stand will be invited to throw a raw egg as hard as they can at a 20mm thick sheet of gel material.

The gel is so shock absorbing no one on target has broken an egg yet.

A bottle of champagne is on offer if anyone is successful.

Extensive technical information will be available at the show on all products, including tensile strength, compression set, specific gravity, hardness, elongation, chemical resistance, thermal conductivity, resonance magnification/frequency, dielectric breakdown strength.

Other available products on show include light-load thermoplastic elastomer vibration/noise control mounts and sheet materials for die cutting into gaskets.
