Gresham Power has provided a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) power solution for a new generation of military submarine sonar systems.

Gresham Power has provided a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) power solution for a new generation of military submarine sonar systems Responding to an enquiry from a major defence contractor Gresham used one of its family of "flexibility" power supplies to provide the basis of a cost effective and fast-turnaround solution for this military application

The new power supplies are designed to replace those currently in service, which do not provide the 3.3V DC output now required by the latest generation of embedded computing.

A new power supply configuration was therefore needed.

There was also a secondary requirement to future-proof the new power supply by ensuring provision for +/-15V DC outputs, which are expected to be required in the medium term.

The new power supply is to operate from the existing onboard 115V AC, 60Hz, three-phase supply, be fully enclosed and convection cooled via a "cold wall" mounting.

The outputs provided are; +3.3V DC/23A, +5V DC/20A and +/-12V DC/ 0.5A each.

Maximum total power is limited to 250W.

Two power supplies are required per system, each providing power to independent modified COTS cPCI backplanes.

"This is an ideal application for our 'flexibility' family of products", comments Jake Moir, Managing Director of Gresham Power.

"We are very experienced at providing full custom military power conversion systems and can apply this knowhow to COTS projects with great confidence".
