Global Sources' 'China Sourcing Report: UPS' shows that uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) makers in mainland China and Taiwan expect exports to reach US $574.5 million in 2005 - up 17% from 2004.

Publisher of the report, Mark Saunderson, said: "Demand for back-up power sources is being driven by rising IT spending and an increase in products which require fail-safe power protection".

Global consumption of uninterruptible power supplies is expected to grow annually by 10% until 2008, according to Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute.

By this time, global UPS shipments are expected to reach 25.7 million units and be worth US $6.1 billion.

Saunderson added: "There are currently about 150 uninterruptible power supplies makers in mainland China and Taiwan".

"By 2010, mainland China alone is expected to account for more than 30% of global UPS shipments".

The report shows that most UPS systems currently shipped by mainland China and Taiwan are low-capacity models - with power ratings of 5kVA and below - which are used in home or small enterprise applications.

Most makers, however, are shifting production to higher-power systems, with a 10kVA or greater power rating.

Saunderson added: "Mainland China makers expect 2005 sales to reach US $138.4 million, up 71% from 2004".

"Taiwan companies expect sales to grow 25% in 2005 to US $313.4 million".
