Chinese handset makers move up-market

Mainland China handset makers are focusing on midrange and high-end mobile phones to grab a bigger share of overseas markets.

Mainland China and Taiwan exported over 207 million 2.5G and 3G phones in 2005 - 28% of the world total, according to Global Sources' China Sourcing Report: 2.5G and 3G phones.

The report indicates that buyers sourcing 2.5G and 3G phones from mainland China and Taiwan can expect increased supply and more value-added models in the coming months.

Findings are based on in-depth manufacturer interviews, factory visits and surveys.

Report publisher, Mark Saunderson, said: "Surveyed makers in mainland China expect to increase output by an average of 44% this year".

"Taiwan makers were far less positive with makers projecting output increases of 8.5% on average".

Mainland China makers are focusing on midrange and high-end mobile phones to grab a bigger share of overseas markets.

Among surveyed mainland China manufacturers: 90% are enhancing camera resolution; 90% are integrating A/V capability; and 70% are increasing LCD resolution.

Taiwan makers will continue to emphasise feature-rich models as they cater to OEM and ODM buyers.

Among surveyed Taiwan manufacturers: 92% are increasing LCD resolution; 92% are working on Bluetooth/Wi-Fi functionality; and 83% are increasing the number of display colours.

The 90-page report includes detailed profiles of 24 Mainland China and Taiwan manufacturers and features a product gallery with 59 top-selling export models.

It also includes production and pricing forecasts as well as in-depth reports on major supply centres.
