Makers of headphones in Greater China expect to export 170 million units in 2006, up 17% over 2005, according to Global Sources' "China Sourcing Report: Headphones" The report shows the increase is being driven by demand for wireless headphones

Greater China accounts for 60% of the global supply of headphones.

The report, which surveyed headphone manufacturers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, shows exports account for an average of 79% of total production.

Mark A Saunderson, Publisher of the report, said: "While Bluetooth is not a mainstream technology yet, it's expected to be a major market driver as the number of Bluetooth-enabled audio visual appliances and gaming devices grows".

"Headphone makers are responding to this and aligning their product development and R and D accordingly".

However, the report also shows wired headphone manufacturing will still be the mainstay of the industry in the medium term.

"Many manufacturers are choosing to maintain their existing wired product lines and gradually adopt Bluetooth due to the investments required for production, testing equipment and certification requirements for export models", said Saunderson.

"Bluetooth units will continue gaining traction and are projected to gain wide-scale market acceptance in two to three years".

The report shows overall supply of headphones in Greater China is expected to grow steadily despite most manufacturers maintaining stable production of wired headphones.

Of the surveyed manufacturers: 40% expect output increases of up to 25%; 16% expect output increases of 26 to 50%; and 13% expect output increases of 51% or more.

The report shows manufacturers are anticipating increases in production costs, due to rising raw material prices and RoHS compliance.

However, manufacturers are looking to absorb these costs in the short-term to keep prices stable.

Of the surveyed makers: 41% predict stable prices; 22% predict a 5-10% increase; and 6% predict more than 10% increase.

The 97-page "China Sourcing Report: Headphones" provides proprietary market information from 35 suppliers, including 24 in-person factory visits to manufacturers.

The surveys, price trends and supply forecasts help buyers make better-informed purchasing decisions.
