PowerQUICC III processors gain RTOS support

A Green Hills Software product story

Green Hills Software is supporting Motorola's PowerQUICC III family of processors with its Integrity real-time operating system (RTOS).

Green Hills already provides PowerQUICC III support through its Multi IDE (integrated development environment) and C/C++ optimising compilers.

The addition of support through Integrity provides a total solution that automates all aspects of communication and networking embedded system development.

"Motorola delivers intelligence and programmability to the network, and we' re proud to offer such a broad portfolio of networking silicon", said David Perkins, Vice President and General Manager of Motorola's Networking and Computing Systems Group.

"Green Hills consistently supports our PowerQUICC and PowerPC processor families, and we applaud their commitment to our new PowerQUICC III architecture.

Since last summer, PowerQUICC III customers have been able to develop and run their software on Multi and its simulator, and we continue to work closely with Green Hills to enable Integrity to play a key role in PowerQUICC III applications".

Designed for applications that require high performance and high reliability, Integrity is a fast, deterministic, royalty-free RTOS.

Integrity enhances reliability and determinism by running with interrupts continuously enabled and guaranteeing access to the CPU and memory for critical tasks.

Other RTOS solutions do not offer this protection or security, leaving systems vulnerable to failure from errant application code, viruses, and hackers.

Integrity is part of a complete solution comprised of Green Hills Software's Multi IDE, the first IDE available for the PowerQUICC III family, and the Green Hills Probe.

An Integrity simulator (ISIM) enables programmers to develop and test their code on a PC or workstation without the need for PowerQUICC III hardware.

A real-time EventAnalyzer enables users to view system and user events graphically.

Multi's optimising C and C++ compilers, which have taken top honours in recent EEMBC Telecom and Dhrystone performance benchmarks, produce fast and compact code for the MPC8540/60's e500 core.

The compilers provide a number of key optimisations that take full advantage of the e500 core's advanced instruction set, pipeline, registers, SIMD data types, and SIMD intrinsics.

Multi for the entire PowerQUICC family, including the MPC8560 and MPC8540, is available now.

Integrity for the MPC8540 and MPC8560 will be available in early Q3 as early development boards become available.
