Compilers create top PowerPC benchmarks

A Green Hills Software product story

Freescale Semiconductor has used Green Hills Software's Multi C/C++ compilers to achieve record-setting performance on benchmarks recently certified by EEMBC Certification Laboratories.

With the publication of these results, the Green Hills C/C++ compilers gain the distinction of producing the highest out-of-box scores in every EEMBC category.

High-performance compilers are important to developers creating a wide range of embedded products such as high-end routers, wireless basestations, semiconductor inspection equipment, high-end printers, and state-of-the-art military, healthcare monitoring and industrial imaging systems.

Green Hills Software's optimising compilers enable lower production costs for embedded product makers because they improve processor performance.

As a result, product designers can select a less-expensive processor to achieve a given level of performance, or can add additional software features to their product.

For example, a printer manufacturer can boast more pages per minute or a wireless company can add more voice channels serviced by a wireless basestation facility.

Green Hills Software has 23 years of experience writing optimising compilers for over 40 processor architectures.

At the heart of Freescale's chart-topping scores is a new generation of compiler technology found in the Multi IDE for the PowerPC including: full support of Freescale's AltiVec single-instruction/multiple-data (SIMD) vector processing technology; effective scheduling of the PowerPC pipeline; and several advanced register allocation techniques.

"More EEMBC semiconductor members have chosen the Green Hills compiler to generate their EEMBC benchmark scores than any other compiler in the industry", said Markus Levy, EEMBC President.

"Furthermore, the EEMBC Certification Laboratories confirmed that Freescale's processors and the Green Hills compilers generated the scores according to EEMBC's regulations, giving extra credence to the processor's and compiler's capabilities".

The Green Hills C/C++ optimising compilers for the Freescale PowerPC MPC7447A processor families are immediately available.
