RTOS secures Intel advances

A Green Hills Software product story

Green Hills Software has enhanced its Integrity Workstation software to support Intel Virtualisation Technology-enabled processors and chipsets.

Green Hills Software has enhanced its Integrity Workstation software to support Intel Virtualisation Technology-enabled processors and chipsets.

The Integrity Workstation is based on the secure and safety-certified Integrity operating system, and uses Green Hills Software's Padded Cell virtual machine technology to provide an operating environment that supports high criticality applications alongside traditional, unmodified desktop and server operating systems, such as Windows, Linux and Solaris.

Software solutions that incorporate Intel Virtualisation Technology enable multiple operating systems to be run simultaneously in their own protected environments.

"What is unique here is technology that reaches the highest level of security while still running more software than any other IT system in the world", says Dan O'Dowd, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Green Hills Software.

"Intel Virtualisation Technology accelerates guest operating system execution performance and robustness, making this platform even more compelling for next-generation military, intelligence, critical infrastructure and financial applications".

"The combination of Green Hills' software and Intel Virtualisation Technology provides significant improvements in next-generation security platform enablement", says Steve Price, Director of Marketing, Embedded and Communications Processor Division, Intel.

"When using the Integrity Workstation from Green Hills Software, customers can fully realise the benefits of Intel Virtualisation Technology: enabling protected computer usage models while preserving investments in software".

Integrity Workstation incorporates a high-assurance human interface device manager, which manages the display of information at multiple security levels yet still supports a rich graphical environment.

The human interface device manager provides a cross-domain information transfer capability that can be customised to support application or system-specific regrading policies.

It also provides a trusted path for the shared keyboard and mouse devices and a multifactor login and authentication mechanism that cannot be spoofed.

Designed and developed to meet the most stringent security requirement - Evaluated Assurance Level (EAL) 7 of the Common Criteria - Green Hills Software's Integrity is the only commercially developed operating system to be certified by in-house experts as a part of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) systems by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the stringent DO-178B Level A, the highest level of safety in which a system failure may be catastrophic.

Integrity is also the first operating system to undergo a Common Criteria security evaluation at EAL 6+, a level of assurance that has never been achieved by any other operating system.

Integrity's flexible architecture enables it to scale from small footprint embedded devices all the way up to enterprise class servers.

Integrity Workstation is also the first operating system environment to be certified conformant to the latest Posix standard, Posix.1-2003, making it an ideal platform for the development and deployment of open standards-based applications.

Integrity Workstation incorporates Green Hills Software's award-winning Padded Cell software which enables multiple legacy operating systems and applications to be run in secure partitions on the same computer.

Unlike other virtual machine technologies, Padded Cell never runs a single line of virtual machine or guest operating system code in the supervisor mode of the microprocessor, ensuring that secure applications cannot be subverted or denied service, even if other parts of the system are connected to the Internet and subjected to its associated hackers and worms.

The resulting platform enables systems designers to build the most security-critical applications and run them alongside familiar operating environments, saving cost, space, sise, weight, and power over multiple hardware platforms.

Integrity Workstation runs on commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) PC-compatible platforms.
