Green Hills Software has announced that NASA is using Green Hills's Platform for Avionics in safety critical electronics aboard its Orion crew exploration vehicle.

Gary Shubert, Orion flight software manager for Lockheed Martin, said: 'Lockheed Martin selected Green Hills Software's Integrity and Integrity-178B operating systems for use in the spacecraft's avionics systems, including the Flight Control Module (FCM), Spacecraft C3I Communication Adapter (SCCA), and Backup Emergency Controller.' The Platform for Avionics includes the Integrity and Integrity-178B real-time operating systems (RTOS), a complete toolset for safety critical software development, support for the aviation industry standard ARINC-653 application software interfaces, and the documentation and services required for US FAA DO-178B Level A safety certification.

The Integrity RTOS's partitioning features allow developers to deploy multiple applications on a single processor, at multiple safety certification levels.

This capability enables developers to reduce the number of on-board computers needed to support multiple software systems.

Furthermore, the Platform for Avionics with Integrity-178B is the only safety critical RTOS certified for multiple languages, including Ada, C, and Embedded C++, allowing developers to choose the language and kernel best suited to meet their development needs.
