GSA - the Global mobile Suppliers Association - has issued the third in its quarterly series of independent mobile portals surveys The latest survey charts the evolution of WAP services in the USA for the first time, as well as monitoring the regular cross-section across Western Europe - 72 mobile portals are included in total, representing 18 countries

GSA's president Alan Hadden, commented on the latest mobile portals survey findings: "GSA's quarterly mobile portals survey remains the only regular independent survey of its kind, and we are committed to extending its scope, as evidenced in this latest report.

The comparison between Western European mobile portals and their counterparts in the USA shows a strong contrast.

The majority of the US portals are based on the same mobile portal engine, with similar service offerings as a result.

The initial drive to capture the consumer market is now being replaced by a focus on the business community in line with the economic climate, and the overall future development path remains unclear.

GPRS is in the early stages in the USA, with piloting just commenced in a number of areas - Seattle, New York City and Dallas.

This has been a very stable quarter for the Western European sector, with a maturing of GPRS service availability in the marketplace.

Many European operators are now able to offer GPRS services, and are concentrating on building the subscriber and service base - with our survey noting a move towards flat-rate billing for services.

The significant growth in the "must have" and "nice to have" categories that was noted between Q1 and Q2 did not occur as markedly in Q3 - although we did note clear growth in two sectors - location-based services and device differences, ie extending services to PDAs".

Seven US mobile portals were surveyed - these portals are available through telecomms operators that control 80% of the total nationwide subscriber base of mobile phone services.

Services typically range across e-mail and calendars, with "must-have" categories including news and directories.

The key "nice to have" services include weather updates, hotel listings, direction assistance, entertainment services and personalisation, with less frequently offered services including restaurant, TV, movie and event information.

However, none of the US mobile portals included in the survey offered chat or messaging, betting, games, banking, auctions, timetables, traffic information, location-based services or advertising - underlining a significant gulf between their Western European counterparts in terms of sophistication and service choice.

The principal objective of the quarterly GSA survey is to provide a benchmark in the evolution of mobile portal development strategies, analysing a core selection of mobile portals to determine and analyse emerging trends.
