The Octopus is a complete IP67 Industrial Ethernet solution in which all components use M12 D connector technology as a common interface.

The D stands for a new supplementary coding that is defined especially for Industrial Ethernet.

Standardisation bodies like the DKE are currently working on describing this technology in the international standard IEC61076-2-101 as an annex.

The open standard ensures that systems from different manufacturers are compatible with each other, something that is not the case with the various IP67-RJ45 connectors.

In this way the M12 D technology offers the widest worldwide basis for IP67 connector technology for Industrial Ethernet Hirschmann is addressing the preference for the combination of proven M12 connector and new D coding by integrating this technology in its Octopus solution.

This comprises an IP67 five-port Fast Ethernet switch, a four-pin M12 Ethernet connector, panel-mounted sockets, as well as a media module with M12 connection in IP20 for the Hirschmann MICE modular switch system.

All these components have the M12 D connector technology as a common interface.

The relevant user organisations have accepted the M12 D and adopted it in their installation guidelines: for IAONA this is the "Planning and installation guide", for PNO the "Installation guideline" and for ODVA the "Ethernet/IP planning and installation manual".
