Hitachi has extended its popular H8S/231x series with the addition of three new devices.

Hitachi has extended its popular H8S/231x series with the addition of three new devices The H8S/2310 and H8S/2312 are both ROMless 16bit microcontrollers which feature 2 and 8Kbyte RAM respectively, whereas the H8S/2311 2Kbyte RAM version features 32Kbyte of mask-ROM

These new devices are the first in the series to offer full 16bit performance and a comprehensive range of peripherals yet still meet the low-cost benefits of 8bit microcontrollers.

The new devices operate at a frequency of 3.3V/25MHz, with high performance of approximately 12MIPS Dhrystone.

The H8S CPU core executes basic instructions in a single cycle, resulting in a minimum instruction cycle time of just 40ns when executing from on-chip ROM.

The H8S CPU also offers a full 16Mbyte address range, allowing up to 16Mbyte of external memory to be addressed.

The microcontrollers feature a range of high performance peripherals designed to increase overall system performance by reducing the CPU's workload.

These include a pseudo-DMA function known as the data transfer controller (DTC), which can autonomously service all peripherals and memory for data transfer tasks, leaving the CPU to focus on its primary duties.

Also featured is a six channel 16bit timer pulse unit (TPU).

Four of the six channels can be cascaded to form two 32bit timers; it has 16 input capture or output compare units and can be driven directly from the system clock to provide 40ns timer resolution.

The TPU can also generate up to 15 PWM signals, trigger the DTC and the ADC and interpret signals from phase counting encoders.

A buffer facility enables a reduction of the interrupt rate, as may be required during input capture operation, for example.

As with all H8S products, the new devices offer low power consumption.

At a clock speed of 2MHz for example, the power consumption is typically less than 10mA, and at full speed typically 50mA.

This can be further improved through clock gearing for the bus masters, module stop mode to turn off unused modules, sleep mode and standby mode.

For increased convenience and reliability of design, the H8S/2311 mask-ROM device is complimented by the H8S/2318F Flash microcontroller.

This can be used during development and to ramp up production for manufacturing processes while the mask-ROM device is being shipped.

Other peripherals on the three new devices include two additional 8bit timers to support low power operation, a watchdog timer, two serial ports (USARTs with additional support for a subset of ISO7816-3), an eight channel 10bit ADC, a two channel 8bit DAC and up to 71 I/O ports, some of which feature programmable pull-up, open drain and schmitt-trigger characteristics.

The H8S/231x series is supported by Hitachi's new E6000 emulator and Lauterbach's Trace32-FIRE emulator.

All products are available immediately in a small 100-pin TQFP with 0.5mm pin pitch.
