Hitachi's new Compact Emulator is a powerful low-cost tool for most debugging needs.

Hitachi's new Compact Emulator is a powerful low-cost tool for most debugging needs The tool has been designed using FPGA technology, which allows emulator functions to be reprogrammed during use for the first time

This allows the emulator to offer many new features that have not been available before, including enhanced breakpoints and PinView/PinSet.

The use of FPGAs will also enable new features to be easily added electronically in the future, for example as a download.

The PinView/PinSet feature on the new emulator allows a device's I/O pins to be viewed and stimulated before the user's hardware is available.

At any time, users can both toggle an I/O pin from the keyboard and read the set value of the pin.

As with other Hitachi development tools, the Compact Emulator is integrated into the Hitachi Debugging Interface (HDI) version 5 front-end, giving the developer seamless access to its advanced debugging capabilities.

The tool does not require an internal interface card to communicate with the host machine as it uses the USB port now shipped as standard on most IBM compatible PCs.

The Compact Emulator hardware is modular in its design.

A minimum base unit offers conventional debug functionality including limited real-time trace.

Enhancement modules can be added as required and include a 65,000 cycle enhanced real-time trace buffer.

The modular approach of the tool allows users to decide which extra debug functions they require in addition to the standard base functions, for example the trace board module, which is available now.

The tool is shipped in two forms, standard and with the trace board fitted.

The Compact Emulator features full speed zero wait state emulation; user configurable emulator functions including 256 cycle trace buffer; two channel address/data/mask breakpoint; 256 PC breakpoints; single stepping of user code; emulation of 500Kbyte with up to 2Mbyte emulation memory; and illegal access handling (R/W or guarded area access).

The tool also offers a selection of fully programmable emulator clocks from 2 to 20MHz or a target clock; runtime measurement with a resolution of 100ns and no upper limit; a voltage follower that provides automatic tracking of the target system supply voltage to ensure that the emulator draws no power; reprogramming of emulator logic O/S and firmware in the field; and a 12Mbit/s USB host interface.

The first version of the Compact Emulator, the CE2148R, has been released to support the H8S/2148F series of high performance 16bit microcontrollers, which includes over 30 different devices in a variety of package and memory sizes.

Members of the series have a variety of 8 and 16bit timers, on-chip watchdog timers, up to five serial interfaces, up to 24 channels of A/D and up to 82 I/O pins.

The CE2148R is available now.
