More memory for smart card controller
A new low-power high-memory-capacity 16bit microcontroller will enable the implementation of multiple large applications in one smart card.
Hitachi has a new low-power, high memory capacity, 16bit microcontroller that will enable the implementation of multiple large applications in one smart card The AE46C1 employs a 0.18um CMOS process that enables it to incorporate high-reliability memory technology and reduce power consumption to approximately half that of Hitachi's previous AE46C model

MCUs have a huge 32Kbyte of RAM on-chip
Hitachi Europe has announced the immediate availability of a new series of 16bit microcontrollers featuring 32Kbyte on-chip RAM - the first in the industry to do so.
Most integrated GSM RF transceiver so far
Hitachi has launched its most integrated GSM RF transceiver solution to date.
The new microcontroller offers advanced security technology and is designed for use in smart cards that require increased functionality and memory capacity, such as W-CDMA-USIM cards for third-generation mobile phones and multi-application cards.
The AE46C1 incorporates 68Kbyte of highly reliable MONOS (metal oxide nitride oxide silicon) type EEPROM.
This EEPROM has a rewrite speed (erase and write operations) of less than 3ms (per 1-128byte) which is approximately 1.3 times as fast as the AE46C.
A fast mode is available for basic applications or initial data, which has a rewrite speed of less than 2ms (per 1-128 byte).
The device also offers 368Kbyte of mask ROM which is large enough to store applications and data in addition to the operating system.
This frees up space in the EEPROM, enabling the implementation of multi-application smart cards incorporating several large-scale application programs.
The internal circuit of the AE46C1 operates at 1.8V, which results in power consumption roughly one-half that of the AE46C.
This low power consumption can help to extend the battery operating time of mobile products.
The microcontroller also incorporates a number of high-level security features.
These include abnormal voltage and frequency detectors, a coprocessor for Data Encryption Standard encryption processing and an exponential multiplication/division algorithm co-processor enabling the microcontroller to support sophisticated encryption processing.
Hitachi intends to obtain ISO15408 international security standard certification for the AE46C1.
The E6000 emulator can be used as a development environment for the AE46C1 and the existing AE-4 Series of software resources are also compatible.
