Large capacitors avoid board bending

Superterm is a flexible board polymer termination that helps avoid board bending in multilayer ceramic chip capacitors.

HolyStone (Europe) has released large case size multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) Historically, this type of surface-mount device has suffered from mechanical cracking due to board bending and surface arcing on the higher voltages, caused by surface contamination of the capacitor

Either of these can cause the device to fail, so many customers have continued to use large-leaded radial devices instead.

Holystone's Technical and Applications Manager, Clive Youngs, said: "Board bending often brings about mechanical cracking in MLCCs".

"But we've eliminated this with the use of a flexible polymer termination (called Superterm), which minimises the effects of mechanical stress".

"Surface arcing is also now a thing of the past, thanks to an optional proprietary surface-coating to aid cleaning post-soldering".

"This eradicates any surface contaminants, which are the main cause of arcing".

The new MLCCs suit applications including voltage multipliers, surge protection, isolation and power supplies, and DC/DC convertors, ballast, snubber circuits and industrial control.

They are available in popular case sizes from 1515 to 7565 in di-electrics COG/NPO and X7R.

DC voltage ratings range from 50V to 8kV, with capacitance values from 100pF and 33uF.

The range is also fully RoHS-compliant.
