UL created its restricted substances compliance programme to help manufacturers demonstrate due diligence in complying with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, which went into effect on 1st July 2006.
As part of the programme to receive the UL RoHS Mark, Huntsman will provide UL with samples of the base chemicals and formulated chemical products it markets for electrical and electronic applications.
UL will test these samples at the homogeneous level to assess whether the levels for six restricted substances are in compliance with the limits set by the RoHS Directive "Huntsman is committed achieving excellence in environmental, health and safety (EHS) protection", said Paul Hulme, President of the Materials and Effects Division of Huntsman.
"This new UL programme fits the strategic intention of the power and electronic business within Huntsman".
David Haataja, Vice President and General Manager of UL's Restricted Substances Business Sector adds: "Manufacturers are actively seeking ways to demonstrate compliance to RoHS".
"For the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), the purchase of RoHS-compliant components and products is extremely important, and UL will continue to work closely with Huntsman to assist the company in showing due diligence for its end-products and components".
Restricted substances covered under the RoHS Directive include lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr +6), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).
If the tested products supplied by Huntsman meet the RoHS Directive limits, UL will authorise the company to apply the UL RoHS Mark to the manufactured product.
Organisations whose products qualify for the UL RoHS Mark must also accept on-site surveillance visits from a UL representative twice per year.
