Graphics IP features on ARM development board
ARM has integrated Imagination Technologies' PowerVR MBX graphics technology in a custom development chip which forms the basis of the new ARM RealView Versatile family of hardware development boards.
Newly launched at the show PowerVR VXE 250 is a compact standard definition multistandard encode core.
It supports H.264, MPEG-4 and H.263 video encode and JPEG still image encode at resolutions including standard definition Pal and NTSC (720x576 at 25frame/s and 720x480 at 30frame/s).
Says Tony King-Smith, VP marketing, Imagination Technologies: "For video encoders used in mobile handheld applications, several key attributes are paramount: low power consumption, small size and high picture quality".

Multithreaded core to gain new compiler
Imagination Technologies is using the CoSy compiler development system from ACE Associated Compiler Experts, as the basis of the next generation compiler for the Meta multithreaded processor core.
"Additionally the host CPU has to minimum work because PowerVR VXE 250 can process all the compression tasks from image to elementary stream".
PowerVR VXD 330 is a standard definition multi-standard decode core.
It supports H.264, VC-1(WMV 9), DivX, MPEG-4, H.263, MPEG-2, MPEG-1, JPEG at resolutions including standard definition Pal and NTSC (720x576 at 25frame/s and 720x480 at 30frame/s).
Continues King-Smith: "PowerVR VXD 330 provides a complete elementary stream decode solution with minimal overhead on the host CPU - indeed a reduction of up to 99% of host CPU workload is achieved when compared with a software-only solution".
PowerVR VXD 370 (previously known as MSVDX) is a high-definition multistandard video decode core.
PowerVR VXD 370 is capable of decoding H.264, VC-1(WMV 9), DivX, MPEG-4, H.263, MPEG-2, MPEG-1, JPEG at resolutions including 720p, 1080i and 1080p.
This multiple decoder support has been implemented in an extremely power efficient architecture.
As an example, in a 90nm 133MHz implementation power consumption for the core is in the range from 30 to less than 50mW for decoding high definition MPEG-2 main profile and high definition H.264 high profile.
Concludes King-Smith: "Because PowerVR VXD 370 is a highly optimised architecture, with a stream processor to analyse the incoming video bit-stream and reconfigure flexible multimode decode modules in the core accordingly, there are huge benefits in reducing silicon area and power consumption - particularly as a large proportion of the processing logic is common for the many video standards supported by the core".
PowerVR VXD 370 supports all HD resolutions and may be configured to support multiple stream decode allowing rich picture - in-picture options such as electronic programme guide (EPG) grids of subvideos for easy channel selection by the user.
With the addition of the PowerVR TVE TV out core the PowerVR VXD 370 core will enable users to carry and watch HD content on their mobile device or decode the HD content on their mobile device and display it on the latest generation flat panel displays.
PowerVR VXD 370 has already shipped to lead licensing partners and is available for wider licensing now.
Initial silicon from Imagination Technologies' licensing partners is expected shortly.
PowerVR VXD 330 will be available for to lead partners this quarter and for general licensing next quarter.
PowerVR VXE 250 will be available for licensing in the second half of 2007.
PowerVR video cores are targeted at a wide range of applications including HDTV, IDTV, STB and PMP as well as mobile devices, and are supported by an extensive set of hardware drivers and application middleware.
