Intel Corp is working with mmO2 (O2) to speed the development and delivery of wireless devices and optimised applications.

The two companies will work with hardware and software providers to optimise business and consumer applications for use on wireless devices based on the Intel Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel PCA), Intel's development blueprint for designing wireless handheld communication devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities.

The applications will be offered to users by O2.

"O2 is one of Europe's leading wireless carriers with a very strong position in mobile data and Internet services", said Tony Sica, Vice President of Intel's Wireless Communications and Computing Group and director of marketing.

"The collaboration between Intel and O2 will help to improve services, and grow the amount and types of applications available to end users".

As part of the programme, Intel will work with O2 to identify and optimise software programs that O2 can offer to subscribers using Intel-based wireless devices such as the O2 XDA, O2's mobile multimedia device equipped with PDA and cell phone functionality.

The optimised applications will be offered through Revolution, O2's mobile service that offers customers registered on the O2 portal with the opportunity to purchase applications for entertainment, travel, games, reference, business and health.

"Intel is obviously more than a chip company", said Bradley de Souza, Vice President at mmO2.

"They are providing unique value to the types of products and services we offer our subscribers, both in terms of the technology they provide inside wireless devices and in the applications themselves via the development community they work with.

Working with companies like Intel enables us to create an ecosystem where network providers and equipment manufacturers can work closely with application developers".

Both companies will work within their respective developer communities to help speed the development and delivery of wireless devices and optimised applications.
