Integrated Microelectronics expects a 15% year-on-year growth in dollar revenues despite a sluggish global EMS industry.

Integrated Microelectronics expects a 15% year-on-year growth in dollar revenues despite a sluggish global EMS industry "We continue to sustain our growth amid a very challenging global business environment and increasingly demanding customers", says Arthur R Tan, President and Chief Executive Officer of IMI

"We were able to take full advantage of the few positive market trends.

The strong demand in notebook computers has driven an increasing demand for slim-type hard disk drives and optical disk drives".

According to research firm Market Intelligence Center, shipment of notebook computers is expected to increase by 25% to 28 million units in 2003.

Contributing to the favourable demand is the growing trend towards mobility and ease of wireless access, lighter and appealing form factors, and attractive product designs.

"Our customers, the key players in the storage device market, are supplying increasing demand for disk drives coming from leading global notebook computer manufacturers".

IMI's market strength in EMS for the storage industry is increasingly paralleled by successful developments in other industry segments, such as consumer and industrial electronics segments.

"We continue to diversity our industry segments portfolio and move towards emerging and profitable niche markets", says Tan.

"The key is being able to spot opportunities and capitalise on them".

Through its design services and original design manufacturing (ODM) product development arm Eazix, IMI has been expanding into the fast-growing market for wireless data communication and connectivity products.

Eazix offers a complete platform of wireless solutions as part of the company's ODM initiatives, including WiFi embedded modules and adapters based on IEEE802.11b and g standards for local area networking and multimedia wireless applications, Bluetooth embedded module solutions and adapters, as well as fleet tracking and remote security solutions.

"WiFi momentum has been one of the strongest forces behind demand in the industry in 2003 and we continue to see an increase of deployment of this technology as all major industry players support WiFi connectivity", says Tan.

Eazix is at the forefront of these market developments, offering high quality and cost competitive connectivity solutions that are customised to market requirements and create higher value for OEM customers.

IMI recently introduced a new corporate vision: "Be the best electronics manufacturing solutions provider to our global partners".

IMI's new vision is aligned with the aggressive medium-term strategy, building on the 23 years of proven experience as an electronics manufacturing solution provider for some of the world's largest OEMs and extending the value proposition to compete with tier-two global EMS companies.

The market defines tier-two EMS companies as those having annual revenues in the vicinity of US $500 million to about US $1 billion.

IMI aims to capture the upturn in the global electronics industry "though business expansion of current customers, diversification to other fast-growing market segments, and increased revenues from design and ODM activities", says Tan.

In order to achieve this aggressive growth target, IMI has engaged in a number of strategic actions during the year by creating a customer-focused organisation to drive opportunities in specific industry segments.

Also continuous steps are taken in improving process efficiency and productivity throughout the 93,000m2 of manufacturing facilities and logistics operations.

IMI is also gearing up for business expansion in new locations in Asia and Eastern Europe to more effectively target opportunities in those markets.

Crucial to its business expansion plans is the establishment of global strategic partnerships.

"Having the right global partners accelerates our growth curve, providing us speed, flexibility, and agility to be able to reach our goals", says Tan.
