ODM brings Embedded Linux Technology onboard

An Integrated Microelectronics product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Mar 15, 2004

Eazix has set up an original design manufacturing management partnership with Japanese software development company Embedded Linux Technology.

Eazix, the design service and original design manufacturing (ODM) arm of electronics manufacturing service provider Integrated Microelectronics (IMI), has set up an ODM management partnership with Embedded Linux Technology (ELT), a software development company based in Japan.

The partnership was launched last month in the Linux Forum sponsored by ELT, which was held in Tokyo, Japan and participated in by 152 delegates from different Japanese OEMs.

The initiative is intended to provide embedded Linux-based ODM and box build or module assembly services to Japanese OEMs.

The partnership, likewise, aims to capitalise on ELT's experience in programme management for Japanese OEM companies, and IMI and Eazix' strength in manufacturing and ODM.

ELT will handle project management for Eazix, filtering opportunities and providing technical support.

Eazix' role is to provide software, hardware, and mechanical design services, prototyping, and box build or module assembly.

Embedded solutions or systems are computers that are enclosed in customised hardware.

They are hidden inside everyday objects that we use in our lives like cellular phone and portable medical equipment.

The ELT-Eazix partnership, however, targets customers and products requiring embedded Linux applications in the following markets: network camera, personal digital assistant, set-top box, home server, DVD recorder, and Internet protocol phone.

Eazix President Arthur R Tan says: "This partnership is expected to broaden Eazix' reach in the Japanese software development, ODM as well as OEM markets.

We are banking on our experience in embedded software development for small electronic devices and appliances, and our complete electronics manufacturing solutions to make this partnership a success".

ELT President and CEO, Hide Sakamoto says: "We anticipate plenty of projects for the partnership on account of greater acceptance of Linux software solutions for commercial use.

ELT has many embedded Linux customers in Japan, and Eazix and IMI will bring their technology and manufacturing expertise into our market.

We are confident that the ELT-Eazix partnership will produce innovative and technically superior solutions at a competitive price".

Eazix has experience in developing embedded software for applications running in the following target microcontrollers and microprocessors: Panasonic, Toshiba, Intel, Motorola, Hitachi, Texas Instruments and Mitsubishi.

Moreover, it has worked with different real-time operating systems, including embedded Linux, providing driver, middleware (protocol stack) and application software development services.

Prior to the launching of ODM management partnership, Eazix completed an embedded Linux development project for ELT in 2003.
