Saturn acquisition adds Californian presence

Integrated Microelectronics has completed the acquisition of the EMS and ODM assets of Saturn Electronics and Engineering (Tustin) and its subsidiary Saturn Electronics Philippines (Tustin).

Integrated Microelectronics has completed the acquisition of the EMS and original design manufacturing (ODM) assets of Saturn Electronics and Engineering (Tustin) and its subsidiary Saturn Electronics Philippines (Tustin).

The transaction allows IMI to take full advantage of Saturn Tustin's facilities in Tustin, California, USA, which include a technology and design centre (with capabilities for advanced interconnect research, new product design and development, and engineering and manufacturing process development), prototyping and manufacturing facilities (with capabilities for surface mount technology (SMT) chip-on-flex assembly, and flip chip on flex assembly), and a programme management centre.

IMI also acquires the high-volume SMT assembly facilities in Cebu, Philippines.

Arthur R Tan, President and Chief Executive Officer of IMI, says: "The acquisition of the EMS/ODM assets of Saturn Tustin enhances our capabilities in the areas of product design and development, manufacturing process development, and flip chip assembly, enabling us to provide competitively superior complete solutions to our customers".

"Further, it supports our goal of expanding our reach in our global target markets, especially in the North American market".

Richard Bell, the former Sales Director of Saturn Tustin, will now drive the sales efforts of IMI in the North American region.

Tan adds: "By leveraging the strengths and complementary capabilities of Saturn Tustin, IMI will pursue global outsourcing opportunities more aggressively".

The sale will enable Saturn Electronics and Engineering to focus on its core automotive and electronics businesses.

Saturn will continue to maintain its global product design and purchasing teams in North America and the Far East.

The sale will not affect any of Saturn's automotive business or non-flexible-circuit electronics business.

IMI, which is based in Laguna, Philippines, is a privately owned global EMS company that offers core manufacturing capabilities including PCB assembly, subassembly, and complete product assembly services, as well as higher value competencies in product design, engineering, prototyping and supply chain management.
