Imsys Technologies has released a development platform for the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol.

Microcontroller module outperforms competing solutions based on the ARM, XScale and PowerPC architectures, claiming new standards for performance, cost and energy efficiency.
The efficiency can be finely tuned using several power saving modes.
Besides the efficient use of power, the device offers precise IEEE1588 time stamping and a crypto unit enabling secure communication.
The IM3200 is designed for maximum network throughput, power efficiency and functionality.
Its instruction set extensions provide semantically richer instructions reducing the size and power consumption of the application program memory.
Architectural advancements on efficiency in communications have led to the abolishment of all kinds of data and instruction cache memories normally found in similar devices.
With a dual 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet MAC and IEEE1588 time stamping the IM3200 can be used for precise clock synchronisation of distributed systems in telecomms, industrial automation, navigation, military and track-and-trace systems.
IEEE1588 is the preferred time synchronisation method for real-time Ethernet methods such as CIPSync, EtherCAT, Ethernet Powerlink and Profinet.
The device can operate as a slave, master or grand master in such synchronised systems.
The IM3200 also offers a 25Mbit/s master or slave SPI interface and an I2C interface that can act as master or slave in speeds up to 3.4Mbit/s.
There are three UARTs, each with a speed of up to 921Kbit/s and support for IrDA.
Depending on configuration up to 80 GPIO pins are available.
"With the introduction of the IM3200 we undoubtedly set a new benchmark in price performance per watt in networking devices", says Ola Andersson, President and CEO of Imsys.
"A battery operated network node can now have ten times the battery life of competing platforms".
The software design platform includes Java, C/C++ or ASM32 input and an advanced source-debugging feature reaching throughout all software layers.
For Java oriented projects, the Sun certified Imsys platform offers instant Internet connectivity and shortens time to market with open source network applications.
The IM3200 is delivered in a 12x12mm BGA package with 180 balls and will be available for delivery in the third quarter of 2006, at a suggested resale price of $15.00 in quantities of 10,000 for the 167MHz version.
An evaluation kit for the software platform is available today.
