3Com is to use Intersil's Prism II wireless LAN chipset for its new generation of wireless LAN products.

Designed for smaller offices and organisations with limited technical support staff, the new 3Com 11Mbit/s wireless LAN system is a complete easy-to-install solution that includes PC cards and an access point allowing PCs to be connected to an existing wired network.

It allows fast data transfer including Internet and email access from a portable PC anywhere in the building.

Ideal for small businesses, the 3Com 11Mbit/s wireless LAN solution provides enhanced security and performance while greatly simplifying user installation.

Key innovations in the PC card include the new XJACK antenna that extends out for network connectivity then retracts back into the laptop for convenience while in transit.

A fast access point setup facility allows fully automatic self- configuration of radio channel and network in just 60 seconds, and a new dynamic security link system that is simpler to administer yet far more robust than previous standards-based security approaches.

Finally, the products are Wi-Fi certified, so they are guaranteed compatible with Wi-Fi certified devices from other vendors.

"These new 3Com products are significant as they allow smaller businesses to benefit from wireless networking without having to install a solution designed for large corporate campuses and without specialist support", said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of Prism Wireless Products at Intersil.

"This is another example of a major market leader adopting Wi-FiT standards based on Intersil's Prism chipset for fast, innovative and 802.11b compatible wireless communication".

"We chose the Intersil Prism solution because it was the best solution available to meet our performance and reliability needs", said Paul Fulton, vice president and general manager of the Wireless Connectivity Division at 3Com.

"3Com is committed to delivering a radically simple wireless experience for people so they can accomplish the things that the Internet revolution has made possible".
