Transceivers cut EMI in the long run

An Intersil product story
Edited by the Electronicstalk editorial team Oct 9, 2003

The ISL8483, ISL8488 and ISL8489 are the latest additions to the Intersil Linearlink family of high-performance RS485/R422 data transceivers.

The ISL8483, ISL8488 and ISL8489 are the latest additions to the Intersil Linearlink family of high-performance RS485/R422 data transceivers.

The new transceivers operate from a wider supply tolerance than competing products and all pins have greater than 7kV ESD protection for increased reliability.

Slew rate limiting for a 250Kbit/s datarate minimises electromagnetic interference (EMI) and delivers high data integrity for extended long-run applications.

Typical applications for these new ICs include factory automation, security networks, keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) switching, industrial/process control networks (eg Fieldbus), environmental control systems, HVAC control systems, level translators and RS232 "extension cords".

"The ISL8483, ISL8488 and ISL8489 are specifically targeted for the lower-datarate and longer-run applications," said Mamoon Rashid, Director of Marketing for Intersil's Analogue Solutions Products.

"They offer reduced EMI and improved data integrity making them a desirable pin-for-pin replacement to conventional solutions." The ISL8483, ISL8488 and ISL8489 are high-performance drop-in replacements for competing products of similar nomenclature.

These new-generation transceivers offer designers an upgrade in performance and signal integrity, especially for long-run applications, and are guaranteed to operate over a +/-10% supply range - that's twice the range offered by most competing ICs.

The ISL8483 is a half-duplex transceiver offering multiplexed receiver (Rx) inputs and driver (Tx) outputs to support Rx and Tx disable functions, all in an 8-lead package.

The ISL8488 and ISL8489 operate full duplex with simultaneous transmit and receive in a four-wire network.

All three of Intersil's new-generation high-performance RS485/RS422 transceivers boast a mere 160uA quiescent current, a -7 to +12V common-mode input voltage range and Class 3 ESD protection (better than 7 kV human body model) on all pins.

Both driver output current and thermal limiting protection features are built into each IC.

Package options matching competing products include 8- and 14-lead SOIC and PDIP to accommodate drop-in compatibility.
