Intersil has developed a new triple 16x5 video switch ideal for high bandwidth RGB (red, green, blue) switching applications.

Intersil has developed a new triple 16x5 video switch ideal for high bandwidth RGB (red, green, blue) switching applications.

The EL4544 is a video crosspoint switch that has 16 (RGB differential) input channels, which connect via an internal crosspoint multiplexer to five single-ended output channels.

The EL4544 also features integrated input and output gain controls, auto-calibration for DC restore, a pixel-by-pixel overlay mux and embedded sync decoding.

The EL4544 reduces cost, board space and design time for video switching applications such as security video systems, large video distribution systems and KVM operations.

"The newest member of Intersil's video family is unlike any other competitive devices".

"It provides a new level of integration for video switching applications by replacing the multiple muxes and buffers that are required in other discrete solutions", said Patrick Long, Intersil's Marketing Manager for Video Products.

"Along with its cost, space and time-to-market advantages, the EL4544 allows system designers to send and switch RGB video over standard Cat-5 cabling when used in combination with the EL4543 differential driver with embedded sync encoding".

The EL4544 is programmed through a simple serial interface and can be daisy chained to create large switching arrays.

It has input and output gain controls that provide four levels of control for screen brightness.

The EL4544 can directly drive 150ohm loads and provides a presence-of-signal indicator that looks for syncs on a pre-assigned channel.

It provides crosstalk rejection of 75dB at 100MHz.

The device has enhanced features that include a pixel-by-pixel overlay mux for on-screen display functions and auto-calibrated offset cancellation that keeps screen images sharp and crisp without additional circuitry.

The EL4544 inputs can be used for single-ended signals as well, thus increasing the range of applications for the device.

"The EL4544 is another example of Intersil's commitment to providing innovative high speed analogue solutions and it joins a growing family of leadership video products", added Long.

The EL4544 is now available in Pb-free, 356-pin BGA packages.

The suggested price in 1000 unit quantities is $36.00 for each IC.
