Intersil introduces stereo multiplexer
Intersil has developed the ISL54405, a CD/MP3 stereo 2:1 multiplexer designed to deliver ultra-low distortion audio source or load selector functions with very high signal muting.
First, the device includes two PWM controllers generating 0.8 to 5.5V outputs.
These dual PWMs supply out-of-phase outputs so that input ripple current is reduced to a minimum and they also address the ESR requirements of the input capacitors.
This allows smaller, lower cost input capacitors to be used.
Secondly, external compensation allows optimisation for most cost effective output capacitors and inductors.
Finally, the dual LDOs support all ceramic capacitor designs, further minimising cost.
The ISL6232 features 5 and 3.3V always-linear regulators with up to 100mA output current, and it has a quiescent power dissipation as low as 3.5mW.
Over 95% maximum efficiency is achieved through synchronous rectification and the device's dual PWM/skip mode architecture.
The ISL6232's programmable high light load efficiency extends the battery life in system standby or shutdown mode.
The device's ultrasonic pulse skipping mode maintains switching frequency above 25kHz to eliminate the audio noise enabling high light load efficiency, and fixed frequency PWM operation mode reduces the RF interference in sensitive applications.
The ISL6232 also features overvoltage protection, power-up sequences, power good output, and thermal shutdown.
Additionally, overcurrent protection is provided by sensing the current either through the DCR of the inductor, or more accurately using a current sense resistor.
The peak current detection architecture avoids inductor saturation.
The device automatically shuts down when output voltage is less than 70% of the regulation voltage after 20ms.
The device's internal soft-start feature is provided to control inrush current.
The soft-stop feature avoids negative output voltage for undervoltage protection, overcurrent protection and shutdown by discharging output through an internal switch, and by damping the inductor current.
Intersil's ISL6232 is available now in a 28-lead, lead-free annealed (RoHS compliant) QSOP package with the part ordering number of ISL6232CAZA.
