A new charger chip is optimised to address the requirements of low-capacity single-cell Li-ion applications such as Bluetooth headsets and small portable multimedia players.

Intersil's ISL9204 is optimised to address the charging requirements of low-capacity single-cell Li-ion applications such as Bluetooth headsets and small portable multimedia players The device offers reduced system cost with increased safety by using integrated over-voltage protection to prevent excessive power dissipation

The tiny 2 x 3 mm DFN (dual flat no-lead) package enables it to be used in space-constrained and thermally sensitive applications.

Expanding Intersil's extensive portfolio of fully integrated single-cell Li-ion (Lithium ion) battery chargers, the ISL9204's 28V input voltage rating eliminates the overvoltage protection circuit normally required in low-input chargers, reducing component count and overall system cost.

The charger accepts input voltages up to 28V but is disabled when the input voltage exceeds the OVP (overvoltage protection) threshold minimum of 10V, enhancing system protection.

The device is optimised for smaller cell capacities by setting the trickle charge threshold at 2.7V (recommended by small cell manufacturers) and offering charge current accuracy of 10% between 75 and 150mA.

The ISL9204 performs the constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) charge function required by Li-ion batteries.

The charge current and end-of-charge (EOC) current are programmable with external resistors.

When the charge current reduces to the programmable EOC current level during the constant voltage (CV) charge phase, an EOC indication is provided by the charge (CHG) pin, which is an open-drain output.

Two indication pins, power present (PPR) and CHG, allow simple interface to a microprocessor or LEDs.

Intersil has secured design wins and is shipping the ISL9204 in production volumes.

The Bluetooth headset market has been under development for over five years.

Only recently has the market really begun to take off, reaching levels that the analysts had earlier predicted, driven by improved form factors and lower prices.

And now with most phones having Bluetooth built in, the number of headset shipments could reach well over 100 million units over the next few years.

Key features for the ISL9204 include an integrated pass element and current sensor, no requirement for an external blocking diode, 1% voltage accuracy, programmable EOC current, and charge current thermal foldback for thermal protection.

Target applications include Bluetooth headsets, MP3/multimedia players, stand-alone chargers, mobile phones and other handheld devices.

Intersil's ISL9204 is available now in an 8-lead DFN standard or lead-free package.
