Analogue switch promises lower
distortion
The ISL84684 is a true bidirectional analogue switch with less than 0.5ohm of resistance over the full input signal range providing lower signal loss and lower distortion of midi and voice signals.

Programmable up-converter simplifies basestations
Intersil has added a new highly integrated quad up-convertor to its CommLinkT family of digital radio ICs for fixed basestation applications.
At 2 x 1.5mm, the device is ultrasmall for space-constrained applications in cellular phones and other handheld devices.
Handheld devices increasingly incorporate new audio capabilities such as MP3 playback and FM radios that demand higher signal quality than traditional cellphone voice requirements.
The ISL84684 has significantly lower Ron (on resistance) and THD (total harmonic distortion) at low supply voltages to readily meet market needs.
A low voltage, dual single-pole/double-throw (SPDT) analogue switch, Intersil's ISL84684 is designed to minimise signal distortion in the audio range.
With a signal-to-distortion figure of 78dB, the device does not compromise MP3 or FM radio performance.
Cellular phone designers often face the need for rapid feature addition for new markets or customers.
The number of analogue input pins on baseband chipset devices may be limited and digital geometries may not be optimised for good analogue performance.
In such instances, the ISL84684 can be used to "mux-in" additional functionality such as MP3 playback and FM radio while reducing design risk and occupying minimal additional board area.
It consists of two normally open (NO) and two normally closed (NC) switches.
This configuration can be used as a dual 2-to-1 multiplexer.
The ISL84684 has a single +1.8 to +4.5V supply that allows the device to operate from two-cell NiMH or alkaline batteries and directly off a single-cell Li-ion battery for a larger signal output range.
The digital logic input is 1.8V logic-compatible over the full supply range.
Other key features of the ISL84684 are an on resistance of 0.21ohm at +2.7V, a total harmonic distortion figure of 0.012% (-78dB) for 2V peak-peak into 32ohm, on-resistance matching between channels (maximum of 0.05ohm), and on-resistance flatness across signal range (maximum of 0.03ohm).
Target applications for the device are battery-powered, handheld and portable equipment, cellular phones, pagers, laptops, notebooks, palmtops, portable test and measurement, medical equipment, and audio and video switching.
The ISL84684 is available now in a 12-bump 2.0 x 1.5mm package.
