PWM controller integrates more into less

An Intersil product story

Controller integrates control, gate drivers, output adjustment, monitoring and protection functions into a near-chip-scale-sized 4 x 4mm 16-lead QFN package.

Intersil has introduced a high-performance PWM controller that integrates the control, gate drivers, output adjustment, monitoring and protection functions into a near-chip-scale-sized 4 x 4mm 16-lead QFN package, offering space saving benefits.

The ISL6535 integrates 12V high-speed 3A MOSFET gate drivers for excellent gate drive capability and improved efficiency with less expensive MOSFETs.

Also, the convertor can source and sink current, which is ideal for DDR memory applications.

The device's error amplifier features 15MHz gain bandwidth and a 6V/us slew rate that enables high convertor bandwidth for fast transient performance.

The overcurrent protection monitors the current by using the on-state drain-source resistance of the upper MOSFET, eliminating the need for a current sensing resistor and reducing the overall BOM cost.

The ISL6535 provides a simple, single feedback loop and voltage mode control architecture.

It includes programmable switching frequency that is adjustable from below 50kHz to over 1.5MHz.

The output voltage of the convertor can be precisely regulated to as low as 0.597V, with a maximum tolerance of +/-1% over the commercial temperature range, and +/-1.5% over the industrial temperature range.

Full (0 to 100%) PWM duty cycle support and prebiased soft-start features are also provided.

Operating from a +12V input, the ISL6535 features leading and falling edge modulation, constant frequency operation, 2A source/3A sink at 12V low-side gate drive, 1.25A source/2A sink at 12V high-side gate drive, and it drives two N-channel MOSFETs.

The device offers a reduced 120ns blanking time, soft-start done and an external reference pin for tracking applications (available in the QFN package), and is pin-compatible with Intersil's ISL6522.

Target applications for the ISL6535 include power supplies for some Pentium, PowerPC and graphic CPUs, high-power 12V-input DC/DC regulators, and low-voltage distributed power supplies.

The ISL6535 is available now in 16-lead QFN and 14-lead SOIC packages.

Pb-free plus anneal is also available (RoHS compliant).
