Interface aids FBDIMM adoption
The IN581AMB is the first device to include an interface between the high-speed serial interface and industry standard DDR2 SDRAM that is fully compliant with the JEDEC AMB specifications.
New from Inphi Corporation, the IN581AMB is the first device to include an interface between the high-speed serial interface and industry standard DDR2 SDRAM that is fully compliant with the JEDEC AMB specifications The IN581AMB maximises performance of the high-speed, serial, point-to-point connection between the memory controller and the modules on the channel, a key attribute of the FBDIMM channel architecture, enabling server memory module suppliers and DRAM manufacturers to produce some of the industry's best solutions at extremely low costs

Register and PLL boost memory module bandwidth
Inphi Corp is delivering the industry's first register and phase lock loop for registered DIMMs operating at 667 and 800Mbit/s using DDR2 technology.
"AMB technology is revolutionising the memory industry by enabling the migration of memory to processor architectures from a parallel bus to a serial bus format, similar to the IO and many other communication systems", said Desi Rhoden, Chairman of the JEDEC Memory Committee and Executive Vice President of Inphi Corporation.
"Anticipating this enormous opportunity and recognising a direct correlation to this shift and its expertise, Inphi Corporation, the only fabless semiconductor company playing in this market, developed components that drive new standards in performance, cost and size".
Part of the industry-leading ExacTik Family, the IN581AMB features some of the industry's lowest latency, lowest power, smallest die size and advanced features including per lane high speed pattern generator and BERT testing, resulting in some of the highest performing OEM systems in the world.

Comparators speed analogue digitisation
New latched comparators are claimed to provide an order of magnitude increase in comparator sampling frequency, enabling very high frequency and accurate digitisation of broadband analogue inputs.
Working closely with OEMs and DRAM manufacturers, and leveraging its expertise in production-proven serdes technology, Inphi developed the IN581AMB for at-speed testing, customisable verification and debug environments, and timing margining.
These features are critical for designers working on next-generation servers which require high performance, and large memory arrays.
Inphi's AMB technology is the first to include margin testing, a function deemed essential by all server manufacturers.
In addition to improving price and performance, these traits enable field analysis and improved system fault isolation by server OEMs.
Inphi's new IN581AMB is between 24 and 65% smaller than alternatives - only 5 x 5mm.
The small size has a direct impact on OEM efforts to reduce overall system costs.
In addition, Inphi delivers the lowest latency in the industry, and between 15 and 20% less power than the typical 6W or more associated with other AMB solutions.
The AMB interface is responsible for handling FBDIMM channel and memory requests to and from the local DIMM and for forwarding the requests to other DIMMs.
compared with existing registered DIMM technology, FBDIMMs provide memory capacities up to 24 times higher - 192Gbyte compared with 8Gbyte - and bandwidth up to four times faster - 40Gbyte/s compared with 10Gbyte/s - when used with 1G x 4bit DDR2-800 DRAMs.
It also uses low-signal pins and only 69 pins per channel, whereas existing DIMMs need 240 pins per channel.
Accordingly, because FBDIMMs require a high-performance memory buffer, the AMB's unique channel structure mitigates buffer latency issues typical in registered DIMM technology.
The IN581AMB is available immediately in sampling quantities at approximately $23.00 per unit.
