LEDs for lighting and display applications

An Intertech-Pira product story

A new industry report assesses global market opportunities for light emitting diodes (LEDs).

A new industry report assesses global market opportunities for light emitting diodes (LEDs).

The report from Intertech is entitled "Light emitting diodes (LEDs) for lighting and display applications: a market assessment, technical appraisal and strategic outlook 2003-2015".

It includes comprehensive data and narrative on the global LED supply chain, technology status, applications, R and D roadmaps, comparisons to other light sources and display technologies, costs, economics, environmental impacts, standardisation metrics, and system design issues.

"Over the last 10 years, the LED market has evolved significantly, especially in applications such as signals and signs", commented Kathryn Conway, consultant to Intertech and author of the report.

"LEDs are transforming entire product classes - such as large screen digital displays, cell phones, PDAs and wireless devices.

LEDs dominate the North American exit sign market, serve 20 to 80% of the traffic signals in some major cities worldwide, and are making fast strides into the automotive, aviation and marine sectors.

In retail and entertainment venues they provide colourful, durable and stylish lighting effects", Conway noted.

"Advances in nanotechnology, compound semiconductor materials and enhanced manufacturing techniques are enabling a new generation of high-brightness blue and white LEDs", commented Conway.

"The success of LEDs lies in their longevity, energy efficiency, durability, low maintenance cost, and compact size.

Replacing conventional lamps with LEDs easily can cut electricity demand in half in some applications.

In the United States alone, 43 million conventional lamps could be displaced by LEDs by 2010, doubling to 90 million by 2015.

The report addresses the specific technical, business and market barriers that must be surmounted to achieve savings in each application".

One extensive appendix included with the report, the "Directory and source guide", also is published as a 200-page document that can be purchased separately.

It provides detailed information on major international market players, including materials manufacturers, LED and LED lighting manufacturers, fabricators, conferences, associations, web sites, and literature resources.

The directory lists nearly 600 players in the international LED industry.

These two, unique LED publications are of particular value for: solid state lighting manufacturers; advanced lighting designers and architects; traditional lighting industry company executives and R and D staff; epitaxy and fabrication equipment suppliers; substrate, chemical and other suppliers to the led industry; government policy makers and energy efficiency advocates; and market analysts, venture capitalists and investment bankers.

The programme provides a thorough assessment of LED market developments, near- and far-term applications, regulatory drivers, and competing technologies, plus updates on the technical advancements in LEDs that make them a real challenge to traditional lighting technologies.

Purchasers/clients may request customised consultations on these and other topics so that they can optimise their position in this growing market.
