Resistor provides secondary lightning
protection
IRC Wire and Film Technologies Division has certified its HSF Series resistor to meet or exceed GR1089 lightning strike specifications.

Current sense resistors need less PCB space
IRC Wirewound and Film Technologies has developed a "tight pitch" version of its open air metal element current sense resistor with ratings as high as 3W in a reduced PC board footprint.
Sense resistor handles more current
The OARS-XP Series of current sense resistors has a novel form factor that provides compliant terminations to better handle TCE mismatch between the device and the PC board.
According to David Winkler, Product Manager for IRC's Wire and Film Technologies Division, conventional devices that meet the GR1089 lightning strike specification are relatively bulky through-hole wirewound components.
"Not only does the HSF Series resistor provide engineers with a smaller surface mount option, but it is as capable of handling strong surges as many larger devices", said Winkler.
"Meeting the specifications of the lightning strike portion of the GR1089 standard gives engineers the reliability they need for their telecommunications equipment".
"Typical thick film devices are more vulnerable to surges because the trimmed path of the resistive element provides a failure point where the resistor material narrows", Winkler continued.
"The HSF Series resistor is unspiralled, completely removing this failure mode under these types of strikes, even in the lower resistance values where power is maximised".
"When the components were subjected to 1000V with the standard 10 x 1000us profile, the HSF products realised a resistance change of less than 0.2%".
The HSF Series resistors feature a power rating of 1W at 70C and a working voltage of 350V.
The device is available in resistance values of 5.9, 11, 27, 68 and 270ohm, with a tolerance of +/-10%, and TCRs to +/-50ppm/C.
Maximum operating temperature is +150C.
IRC will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements.
Typical pricing for the HSF Series resistors is approximately $0.18 each in quantities of 10,000.
Lead-time is from stock to 4 to 6 weeks.
