Toshiba's Genio e550G for the Japanese market includes Insignia's Jeode PDA Edition product.

Toshiba's Genio e550G for the Japanese market includes Insignia's Jeode PDA Edition product.

The Toshiba GENIO e550G, powered by Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002 operating system and the 400MHz Intel PXA250 applications processor, is the fastest and smallest PDA in this product category.

Insignia's software for mobile devices will enable Toshiba PDAs to download and run PersonalJava-based mobile services, including games, mobile commerce, business to business applications, email and personal management software, with high performance and extended battery life.

"Toshiba has always been in the forefront of development of new mobile devices, and the use of Insignia's Jeode PDA Edition as the PersonalJava solution will provide additional function to the users of our mobile devices", said Hidehito Koka, Senior Manager, PDA Product Division of Toshiba's Mobile Communications Company.

"Insignia has developed the Java enabling software that provides Toshiba with the capabilities required by our customers while minimising our time to market".

"We are very pleased to announce the new relationship with Toshiba on this exciting Genio product", said Mark McMillan, President of Insignia.

"As our company is focused on the mobile phone and PDA market, we worked closely with Toshiba to deliver the best-of-breed Java-enabled mobile device".

The combined PDA, smartphone, and mobile handset segment is the fastest growing market for smart devices.

Last year in Japan alone, over 10 million users switched to Java-enabled phones to access a variety of sophisticated services, from location based travel assistance to interactive entertainment.

The latest ARC Group market research study highlights that all mobile devices will be Java-enabled within five years.

This study estimates that 1.1 billion will be capable of running Java applications by 2006.
