Java-enabling software hits latest standard
The latest version of Insignia Mobile Foundation Java-enabling software for mobile devices fully supports and leverages the new MIDP2.0 specification.
The latest version of Insignia Mobile Foundation Java-enabling software for mobile devices fully supports and leverages the new MIDP2.0 specification as well as incorporating new cost effective features and capabilities specifically designed for mobile operators and device manufacturers.
These include the new Insignia EasyStep architecture that enables easy porting of MIDP1.0 optimisations and customisation to MIDP2.0 along with Insignia's patent pending acceleration techniques that speed execution in a radically reduced memory footprint.
Also, Insignia Mobile Foundation offers the widest range of platform support, including Nucleus, Qualcomm Brew, Microsoft Smartphone and Pocket PC, Palm and Linux.
As one of 15 Mobile Edition executive committee members of the Java Community Process, Insignia cast its vote on Monday to ratify the new MIDP2.0 standard.
MIDP2.0 includes many new APIs enhancing functionality for application delivery, user interface, multimedia, security and networking.
"Mobile device manufacturers and operators are increasingly committing to Java technology, which provides the ideal platform for a wide range of new content such as gaming, enterprise software and mobile services", commented Peter Bernard, vice president of product marketing at Insignia Solutions.
"However, new standards such as MIDP2.0 combined with a myriad of operating environments and recently ratified optional packages can add complexity, which significantly impacts development cost and deployment time of J2ME-based devices.
Insignia Mobile Foundation tackles these issues through a combination of its unique EasyStep architecture that enables MIDP1.0-based customisations to be easily moved forward to MIDP2.0, saving months of valuable development time, and a wide range of platform support".
In addition to full support for MIDP2.0, Insignia Mobile Foundation includes two new products - Insignia OpX that productises operator specific requirements in J2ME implementations, and Insignia OpP that productises a variety of J2ME optional packages that can be integrated into mobile devices.
Insignia's wide range of platform support including Nucleus, Qualcomm Brew, Microsoft Smartphone and Pocket PC, Palm, Linux and a range of RTOS kernels enables a single J2ME code base to be used across all devices in an operator network or manufacturer product line, providing significant development leverage and license flexibility.
Insignia Mobile Foundation is now architected to easily incorporate ARM Jazelle support and supports significant new techniques that lower power consumption, speed execution, and radically reduce memory footprint size resulting in less than half the memory usage of Sun's CLDC HotSpot with even faster performance.
Insignia Mobile Foundation is also extensible with over the air firmware updates using Insignia's Secure System Provisioning technology, which radically reduces the risk and cost of device recalls.
Insignia has recently demonstrated that it is working with device manufacturers and silicon vendors to incorporate its newest version of Mobile Foundation and expects devices using the new version of its software to reach customers in 2003.
