A new fibre-optic backplane connector unveiled at OFC 2004 is especially suited to severe environment applications, and significantly expands Cannon's PHDP multichannel optical interconnects system product portfolio The backplane connector integrates high-performance small-form-factor 1.25mm zirconia ceramic fibre-optic termini into a dense package solution intended to operate in parallel with copper backplane interconnects in card and rack solutions such as VME

The product delivers the same connection density as ribbon fibre connectors but with significantly lower insertion loss, higher return loss and the advantages of single channel cleaning and reparability.

Designed with military applications in mind, the connector may also be used in many applications such as communications equipment, and factory automation hardware.

"Cannon has designed a combination of engagement sequencing, interconnect guides and precision interfaces to ensure the durability and long term performance that is unmatched by any other optical backplane connector", said PHD New Business Director, Jay Betker.

The connector is manufactured with a unique yet easy to install dual guide system to ensure a complete and robust connection.

The first guide ensures the card guide and daughter card pins are lined up.

After the fibre channels are connected, the second guide ensures the precision optical channels are aligned.

A 10mm float space is provided to absorb tolerance stack-up and mating sequence found in copper interconnect products that might be put into parallel with the all-optical PHD backplane connector.

The fibre-optic backplane connector includes a very robust machined aluminium housing for all of the components.

The internal modules of the connector utilise Cannon's unique eight-channel PHD backplane module.

This module incorporates features that allow PC, UPC or even APC polishing of termini.

In addition the PHD optical terminus system delivers tuning features for the most stable and lowest possible insertion across a broad range of military grade environments. Request a free brochure from ITT Interconnect Solutions ...
