The IEE has added its support to the recommendations of the Electronics Innovation and Growth Team report which get to the core of the opportunities and obstacles facing the UK electronics industry.

The IEE has welcomed the wide-ranging recommendations of the Electronics Innovation and Growth Team (EIGT) report which get to the core of the opportunities and obstacles facing the UK electronics industry.

Sir Robin Saxby, Deputy President of the IEE and ARM Chairman, said: "It is vital for the UK's long term prosperity that we capitalise on our strong science, engineering and technology base".

"We welcome this report as a step in the right direction to better align government, industry and academic interests".

Particularly welcome is the recommended formation of a Knowledge Transfer Network in electronics design.

The IEE is already in discussions with other industry bodies (eg Intellect and NMI) about how such a network might be formed in a way that will lead to significant growth in the SME sector, which the report recognises makes up over 90% of the companies in this industry.

The IEE already assists industry in exploiting opportunities in inter-disciplinary fields by publishing a nanobiotechnology journal and holding a range of leading edge events and conferences.

Martyn Thomas, speaking for the UK Computing Research Committee (UKCRC), said: "We welcome the opportunities and challenges presented by the DTI report".

"The UKCRC looks forward to working with the electronics industry to establish the UK as a leader in the next generation of dependable, intelligent systems".
